Charles Bolden

Charles Bolden is a renowned keynote speaker, former astronaut and decorated military leader who served as Administrator of NASA from 2009 to 2017 and a Retired United States Marine Corps Major General. With more than five decades of experience in aerospace, science and leadership, Charles is widely respected for shaping modern space exploration. Most notably, he became the first African American to lead NASA, guiding the agency through a transformative era that included the end of the Space Shuttle programme and the growth of international partnerships in space exploration.

Charles began his journey with a strong academic and military foundation. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Science in 1968, before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. After completing flight training, he became a United States Naval Aviator, flying more than 100 combat missions during the Vietnam War across Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Over the course of his military aviation career, Charles accumulated more than 6,000 hours of flying time and developed a reputation as an exceptional pilot and leader. He later strengthened his technical expertise by earning a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California, while also graduating from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, where he worked on advanced aircraft testing and engineering projects.

In 1980, Charles was selected as a NASA Astronaut, beginning an extraordinary chapter at the forefront of space exploration. Across four Space Shuttle missions he logged more than 680 hours in space, serving as pilot on STS-61C in 1986 and STS-31 in 1990, the historic mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit. He later commanded STS-45 in 1992 and STS-60 in 1994, the first joint American and Russian Space Shuttle mission featuring a Russian cosmonaut aboard a U.S. spacecraft. After completing his astronaut career, Charles returned to the Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Major General in 1998, demonstrating outstanding leadership across both military and aerospace fields.

In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Charles as Administrator of NASA, placing him in charge of one of the world’s most influential scientific organisations. During his eight-year tenure he oversaw the final Space Shuttle missions, supported groundbreaking projects such as the Curiosity rover landing on Mars, and helped expand NASA’s international partnerships and future human exploration goals. Today, Charles shares these remarkable experiences as a keynote speaker, inspiring audiences with lessons on leadership, teamwork, innovation, resilience and the future of science and technology. His powerful stories from combat missions, astronaut training and leading NASA offer audiences a rare insight into decision-making under pressure and the mindset required to achieve extraordinary goals.

Event organisers hire Charles Bolden for his rare perspective on leadership, innovation and high-stakes decision making shaped across the military, space exploration and government. As a former astronaut, NASA Administrator and United States Marine Corps Major General, he speaks with authority about leading through change, building global collaboration and pursuing ambitious goals. His stories bring audiences inside defining moments in modern space history, from deploying the Hubble Space Telescope to guiding NASA through the end of the Space Shuttle era and into a new age of exploration. Charles connects these experiences to the challenges organisations face today, offering practical lessons on teamwork, resilience and bold thinking. For example, he often reflects on the international cooperation behind the first joint US-Russian shuttle mission, showing how trust and shared purpose drive breakthrough achievements. His talks leave audiences motivated to lead with clarity, curiosity and confidence when the stakes are high.
