Helen Sharman

Helen Sharman is best known worldwide as the first British person in space, an achievement that instantly established her as an icon of UK science, exploration and perseverance. Selected from 13,000 applicants, she completed an extraordinary eight-day mission aboard the Soyuz TM-12 spacecraft in 1991, becoming not only the first British astronaut, but also the first Western European woman in space and the first woman to visit the Mir Space Station. She has held prestigious roles, including Group Leader of the Surface & Nanoanalysis Group at the National Physical Laboratory and Operations Manager for the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London.
