Matthew Parris

Matthew Parris is a distinguished journalist, broadcaster and former Conservative politician best known for his sharp political commentary and decades-long career with The Times. A former Member of Parliament for West Derbyshire, Matthew later became one of Britain’s most recognisable broadsheet columnists, celebrated for his wit, independence of thought and insight into British public life. His work in journalism, broadcasting and political analysis has earned him numerous awards and a reputation as one of the most influential commentators on British politics.

Matthew was educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a first-class degree in law. Early in his career, he was offered a position with the Secret Intelligence Service but declined the opportunity to pursue a career in politics. He joined the Conservative Research Department, beginning his work in political strategy before being elected Member of Parliament for West Derbyshire in 1979. During this period, he also served as Margaret Thatcher’s Correspondence Secretary, working closely with the Prime Minister and gaining a unique insight into government.

After leaving Parliament in 1986, Matthew transitioned into journalism and broadcasting. He joined The Times as a columnist, where his writing has become a fixture of the newspaper’s political commentary. Alongside his journalism, he developed a successful broadcasting career, presenting programmes including Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions’ and appearing regularly on political discussion shows. His ability to combine humour, historical perspective and political insight has made him a respected voice across British media.

Matthew is also an accomplished author, having written numerous books including ‘Scorn: The Anthology‘, ‘Chance Witness’, ‘Parting Shots’, ‘A Castle in Spain’, ‘The Spanish Ambassador’, ‘Inca-Kola: A Traveller’s Tale of Peru’ and ‘Great Parliamentary Scandals’. In addition to his writing and broadcasting work, he has appeared in documentary programming and even made a cameo appearance in ‘The League of Gentlemen’ in 2017, reflecting his distinctive place in British cultural life.

Matthew is hired as a speaker for his rare perspective on politics, media and public life. Having experienced government from inside Westminster before spending decades analysing it as a journalist, he offers audiences an insightful and often humorous view of how political systems truly operate. Given his history in politics and journalism, he brings a depth of understanding that few commentators can match.

His talks combine storytelling, political observation and sharp commentary drawn from years of writing for The Times and presenting national radio programmes. Matthew delivers engaging and thought-provoking talks that explore leadership, political culture and the changing landscape of British public life.
