Michael Foale

Michael Foale is a British-American astronaut, astrophysicist and veteran of six space missions who has spent more than 374 days in space. One of the most accomplished astronauts in NASA history, he became the first British-born astronaut to perform a spacewalk and is the only NASA astronaut to have completed extended missions aboard both the Russian space station Mir and the International Space Station. Across a distinguished career in space exploration, Michael has played a key role in scientific missions, international space collaboration and the development of future exploration technologies.

Michael began his academic journey at the University of Cambridge, where he studied Physics and Natural Sciences at Queens’ College before completing a doctorate in Laboratory Astrophysics. Following his studies, he worked at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation, where he helped verify navigation software for the Space Shuttle programme. His expertise in science and engineering later led him to NASA’s Johnson Space Centre, where he worked as a payload officer in Mission Control before being selected as an astronaut candidate in 1987.

Over the course of his astronaut career, Michael flew on six space missions, including STS-45, STS-56, STS-63, STS-84, STS-103 and Soyuz TMA-3. He spent extended periods aboard both the Mir space station and the International Space Station and served as commander of the ISS during Expedition 8. During one Mir mission in 1997, he played a critical role in saving the station after a serious onboard incident, demonstrating extraordinary composure and technical expertise. He also participated in the repair of the Hubble Space Telescope, contributing to one of the most important scientific missions in modern astronomy.

Following his active spaceflight career, Michael held senior leadership roles at NASA, including Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Operations at NASA Headquarters and Chief of the Soyuz Branch within the Astronaut Office. He has since continued to contribute to aerospace innovation through projects involving spacecraft technology, Mars exploration concepts and aviation safety systems. Michael is also the founder of Foale Aerospace and has worked on initiatives involving Virgin Galactic and other advanced aerospace programmes.

His talks explore the realities of life in space, the importance of international cooperation in exploration and the mindset required to operate under immense pressure. Michael has delivered popular presentations such as “An Evening with an Astronaut”, sharing stories from his time aboard Mir and the International Space Station at venues including King’s College London, the University of Essex and Queen Mary University of London.

Michael is hired as a speaker for his extraordinary experience at the forefront of human space exploration. Having spent more than a year in space across six missions, he offers audiences a rare insight into leadership, teamwork and decision-making in extreme environments. He regularly shares his experiences at major public lectures and science events, including university lectures and international science festivals.

Here are some of the key milestones that define Michael Foale’s remarkable career in sports:
