Sana Khareghani’s Biography:

Sana Khareghani is best known for her leadership at the forefront of artificial intelligence strategy, governance, and national capability building. As the former Head of the UK Government Office for AI, she played a pivotal role in drafting and delivering the UK’s National AI Strategy, helping secure and direct £1 billion of government investment into the country’s AI ecosystem. Today, she remains a prominent voice in responsible and strategic AI development, bridging the worlds of policy, academia, and industry to shape how emerging technologies benefit society.

Her early career began with a foundation in technical and analytical work. After earning her degree in Computer Science, Sana worked across software engineering, systems engineering, and quality assurance roles, gaining deep insight into how technology is built and deployed in real-world settings. She later expanded her expertise through an MBA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), equipping her with the business and strategic capabilities that would define much of her later work.

Sana transitioned into management consulting, where she advised senior officials and C-suite executives across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Her work centred on strategic transformation, innovation, and organisational change — experience that proved invaluable when she joined the UK Government. Rising to become Head of the Office for AI, she guided national-level initiatives, championed responsible AI adoption, and strengthened the UK’s position as a global leader in AI research and industry.

Today, Sana continues to push the boundaries of responsible AI innovation. She serves as the AI Policy Lead for Responsible AI UK, a £35 million programme aimed at strengthening the UK’s responsible AI research landscape. Alongside this, she sits on the board of Technovation, advises the Tortoise Media Global AI Index, and contributes to the Bristol Interactive AI Centre for Doctoral Training. Sana is now Professor of Practice in AI at King’s College London, shaping the next generation of leaders in AI governance and policy.
