William Butler-Adams’s Biography:

William Butler-Adams OBE is the Group Chief Executive Officer of Brompton Bicycle Ltd and a Chartered Engineer recognised for transforming a niche British manufacturer into a globally admired engineering brand. Since becoming CEO in 2008, he has led Brompton’s growth from a £2 million turnover business employing 27 people to a company generating over £130 million in revenue with more than 750 staff. His leadership combines engineering rigour with commercial innovation, positioning Brompton as a symbol of British manufacturing excellence.

William earned a First Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle before beginning his career at DuPont, where he managed a £60 million polyester facility as Plant Manager. This early industrial leadership experience grounded his approach in operational discipline and technical precision. In 2002, he joined Brompton Bicycle Ltd, recognising its untapped potential in urban mobility and sustainable transport.

After being appointed Director in 2006 and Group CEO in 2008, William reshaped Brompton’s global strategy, expanding international exports while maintaining UK-based manufacturing. Under his leadership, Brompton secured the Queen’s Award for Export and Innovation and strengthened its reputation as a premium engineering brand. He has championed sustainable urban transport, British design and resilient manufacturing supply chains.

William has been appointed OBE for services to industry, elected a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Imperial College London.
