Luke Donald OBE is a former World Number One golfer, two-time winning European Ryder Cup Captain, and one of England’s most accomplished golfers. Following victories as European captain in both the 2023 and 2025 Ryder Cups, Luke cemented his place among the sport’s greatest leaders, becoming only the second European captain after Tony Jacklin to win the Ryder Cup both home and away. Born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, Luke developed his game at Hazlemere and Beaconsfield Golf Clubs, becoming club champion at just 15 years old. After attending the Rudolf Steiner School and the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, he earned a golf scholarship to Northwestern University, where he studied Art Theory and Practice while establishing himself as one of amateur golf’s brightest talents. In 1999 he won the NCAA Division I Individual Championship, breaking Tiger Woods’ scoring record, before becoming the first amateur to win the Chicago Open the following year. Turning professional in 2001, Luke quickly established himself on the PGA Tour, winning his first title at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in 2002 and becoming only the 11th rookie in PGA Tour history to earn more than $1 million during their debut season.

Luke’s career reached extraordinary heights in 2011, one of the greatest individual seasons ever produced by a European golfer. He captured the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, won the BMW PGA Championship, became World Number One, and remained there for a total of 56 weeks throughout his career. That same year he became the first golfer in history to win both the PGA Tour Money List and the European Tour Race to Dubai in the same season. His achievements were recognised with the PGA Tour Player of the Year, European Tour Golfer of the Year, Vardon Trophy, Mark H. McCormack Award, and honorary life membership of the European Tour. Luke was appointed MBE in 2012 and later OBE in 2026 for services to golf.
