Zelda la Grange

Zelda la Grange is a globally respected keynote speaker, bestselling author and former Private Secretary to President Nelson Mandela. An internationally sought-after motivational and leadership speaker, she is best known for serving Mandela for nineteen years as one of his closest aides. Her most notable achievement remains her unique position at the heart of South Africa’s democratic transition, working daily alongside one of the most influential leaders in modern history and translating those lessons into powerful, human-centred keynotes for audiences worldwide.

Zelda grew up in apartheid South Africa, an experience that shaped her worldview and later informed much of her speaking. She completed a three-year National Diploma in Executive Secretarial Studies and began her career in government service in the early 1990s. Starting within the Department of State Expenditure, she developed a reputation for professionalism, discretion and resilience. In 1994, following South Africa’s first democratic elections, she joined the Office of the President, initially working as a senior ministerial typist. Immersed in a rapidly changing political environment, Zelda witnessed leadership under pressure and learned first-hand the discipline and integrity required at the highest level of public service.

Her career progressed quickly as she was promoted to Assistant Private Secretary, before becoming one of President Mandela’s three Private Secretaries. In 1999, Mandela personally requested that she remain in his service beyond his presidency, a rare honour that reflected his trust and respect. Zelda went on to become a Founding Staff Member of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, working alongside Professor Jakes Gerwel to establish Mandela’s post-presidential office. Over nearly two decades, she served in multiple senior roles including Private Secretary, Spokesperson, Office Manager and Aide-de-Camp, supporting Mandela until his passing in December 2013. Her contribution has since been recognised through international honours, fellowships and invitations to address elite audiences around the world.

Today, Zelda la Grange is hired by organisations seeking authentic insight into leadership, ethics and human connection. Her keynote talks explore themes such as transformation, diversity and inclusion, legacy, reconciliation and values-led leadership, all grounded in lived experience rather than theory. Using personal stories from her time with Mandela, she brings abstract leadership principles to life in a way that resonates across cultures and industries. Audiences leave with practical lessons on humility, courage and service, qualities that remain essential in modern workplaces and societies. For organisations looking to inspire meaningful change, Zelda offers a rare and compelling voice shaped by history and humanity.
