In 2005, David was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, focusing on welfare reform and employment policy. He stepped down from the House of Commons in 2015 and was awarded a Life Peerage in the 2015 Dissolution Honours, taking his seat in the House of Lords. He also became Professor of Politics in Practice at the University of Sheffield and later received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Huddersfield in 2017.
A prolific author, David has written books including ‘On a Clear Day’, ‘The Blunkett Tapes’, ‘Politics and Progress’, ‘Building from the Bottom’ and ‘Democracy in Crisis‘.
