Jonny Benjamin & Neil Laybourn

Jonny Benjamin and Neil Laybourn are award-winning mental health campaigners whose extraordinary story has inspired millions and transformed conversations around mental health, suicide prevention and wellbeing. In 2008, Jonny was experiencing severe mental health challenges and contemplated taking his own life on Waterloo Bridge in London. An encounter with Neil, a stranger who stopped to talk with him, ultimately saved his life. Today, the pair are widely regarded as two of the UK’s most influential mental health advocates, using their powerful shared experience to encourage openness, reduce stigma and inspire positive change. Their keynote speeches resonate with audiences across corporate, educational and public sector settings, demonstrating the life-changing impact of compassion, connection and intervention.

Jonny’s journey into mental health advocacy began following his recovery and determination to share his experiences to help others. In 2014, he launched the viral #FindMike campaign in an effort to locate the stranger who had helped him on the bridge years earlier. The campaign attracted international attention, generating more than one million social media views and support from high-profile figures including Stephen Fry and Boy George. After successfully reuniting, Jonny and Neil began working together as speakers and campaigners. Neil went on to found the This Can Happen conference, while Jonny established ThinkWell. Together, they also co-founded Beyond and partnered with Rethink Mental Illness to support those affected by mental health challenges.

Their work has received widespread recognition. In 2015, Jonny and Neil were awarded the Mind Media Award for Making a Difference. Neil also received a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain Awards, while both campaigners were honoured with honorary degrees from the University of Bristol. Jonny has further contributed to the national conversation through his books, ‘The Stranger on the Bridge: My Journey from Despair to Hope’ and ‘The Book of Hope: 101 Voices on Overcoming Adversity’.

As Ambassadors for Mental Health UK, Jonny and Neil continue to champion mental health awareness across the country. Their story was adapted into the acclaimed Channel 4 documentary ‘Stranger on the Bridge’, helping to reach even wider audiences. Through candid storytelling, practical insights and genuine empathy, they empower people to recognise the importance of human connection, speak openly about mental health and create cultures where individuals feel supported and understood.

Jonny Benjamin and Neil Laybourn deliver one of the most moving and impactful keynote presentations available today. Their unique perspective combines lived experience, resilience and practical advocacy, helping organisations better understand mental health and wellbeing. Drawing on years of campaigning, public speaking and community engagement, they offer audiences a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness and intervention. Their presentations inspire meaningful conversations, encourage supportive workplace cultures and provide actionable insights for improving mental health awareness, making them exceptional speakers for conferences, leadership events and wellbeing programmes.

“I would probably say that it was one of the most powerful and inspiring mental health talks I have ever seen. You can put posters up, you can tell people where to go for help but this event delivered something so impactful that I truly think it has made a big difference. Jonny and Neil were absolutely amazing. They will probably tell you that our host Nick also spoke from the heart- he really did open up about his struggles over the last 18 months. The whole event delivered a message that it’s okay to talk and we have a company of people who are there to listen and be there for each other. We will be asking for feedback, but the comments coming through on the day demonstrated the impact this made. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house” – Sally, Muller

“The guys both did really well, I have had great feedback from those listening. Please pass on our gratitude to them both as their discussions fitted in great with our theme for the day and they gave us some great advice about communication in and out of the workplace to help improve/ spot mental health issues.” – Emma, HR Advisor, Tennent Caledonian Breweries UK Ltd, C&C Group Plc

“Just a quick note to say a huge thank you for sharing your story with our Bank of Ireland team this morning – the feedback has been amazing! While that’s lovely in itself, even more importantly is that you will have made a difference to some of our people who didn’t know how they could find the “person on the bridge” that they might be needing to talk to. A huge thank you, really well done and my very best wishes to you both.” – Ian McLoughlin, Chief Executive Officer, Bank of Ireland UK
