Former Police Scotland Inspector, Royal Air Force Police Veteran, Bestselling Author of ‘Blue Lights, Dark Mind & Leadership, Resilience & Mental Health Speaker
Ryan MacDonald’s Biography:
Ryan MacDonald is a former Police Inspector, author and keynote speaker known for his powerful insights on leadership, resilience and mental health. With more than three decades of experience across the Royal Air Force Police and Police Scotland, Ryan built a career in some of the most demanding operational environments imaginable. Today, he is widely recognised for translating those experiences into compelling keynote talks that explore decision-making under pressure and the human realities behind leadership. Ryan is also the author of the #1 Amazon bestselling memoir ‘Blue Lights, Dark Mind’, a raw and honest account of trauma, recovery and rebuilding life after service.
Ryan grew up in Dundee, Scotland, in a working-class family and faced early academic struggles due to undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD. Determined to carve out a different path, he joined the Royal Air Force Police at just seventeen years old. His nine years in military service saw him travel extensively and develop the discipline, situational awareness and leadership skills that would shape the rest of his career. During this period, Ryan also served on operational deployments during the 2003 Iraq War, gaining first-hand experience of working in high-pressure environments where rapid decision-making and accountability were essential.
After leaving the RAF, Ryan joined Police Scotland, where he built a distinguished career spanning more than two decades. Rising through the ranks to become a Senior Police Inspector, Ryan led frontline response teams and managed critical incidents across a wide range of specialist roles. His career included work in Counter Terrorism Policing, Intelligence Operations, Surveillance, and Major Crime Scene Management, where he oversaw complex investigations involving homicide, suicide and serious violence. These roles demanded calm leadership, resilience and the ability to guide teams through challenging and often traumatic situations. Ryan’s service was recognised with formal commendations for leadership and dedication throughout his policing career.
