Suzanne Williams QPM

Suzanne Williams QPM is an internationally renowned hostage negotiator, Independent Crisis and Hostage Manager, Associate Fellow at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and Visiting Lecturer at Harvard University. An accomplished keynote speaker on negotiation, communication, crisis management and leadership under pressure, Suzanne has contributed to the successful resolution of hundreds of hostage and kidnap situations around the world. Her extraordinary contribution to the field has been recognised with the Queen’s Police Medal for her commitment to kidnap, negotiation and saving lives, reflecting a career spent operating in situations where communication, judgement and composure can have life-changing consequences.

Suzanne developed her expertise during a distinguished career with the Metropolitan Police, progressing into some of the most demanding positions at New Scotland Yard. In 1998, she joined the Royalty Protection senior management team at Buckingham Palace, where her responsibilities included security preparations for major royal events, crisis management during unexpected incidents and detailed government planning for serious crimes involving members of the Royal Household. In 2001, Suzanne was appointed Head of the Kidnap Unit and Senior Investigator at New Scotland Yard, before becoming Head of the Hostage Crisis Negotiation Unit in 2003. As the most senior ranking officer responsible for these specialist units, she worked on complex cases involving kidnapping, hijacking and siege situations, while also advising senior government figures through COBR on appropriate negotiation strategies and crisis responses.

Alongside her UK training, Suzanne became an accredited hostage negotiator with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States, strengthening an expertise that would eventually take her across every continent. Her operational career has included negotiations in war zones, incidents involving modern pirates on the high seas, international kidnappings and sensitive cases involving prominent families. Since 2008, Suzanne has worked as a Specialist Kidnap Response Consultant and independent crisis and hostage manager, supporting governments, international NGOs, corporations and family offices with crisis preparation and live incident response. Her expertise has also evolved alongside emerging threats, including the use of negotiation to respond to cyber extortion. Suzanne now shares her experience through academia, teaching on the Oxford Programme on Negotiation at Saïd Business School, where she explores decision-making, persuasive communication, trust, ethics and negotiating across cultures.

As a keynote speaker, Suzanne gives audiences rare access to lessons developed in situations where effective communication can determine whether a crisis escalates or is successfully resolved. She translates hostage negotiation techniques into practical strategies for business, helping leaders understand how to listen effectively, establish trust, influence without authority and make rational decisions when others may be behaving irrationally. Whether addressing senior executives, leadership teams or international organisations, she demonstrates how preparation, empathy and disciplined communication can transform difficult conversations, strengthen relationships and create better outcomes when the pressure is at its highest.
